Because no newborn should lack the essentials

Friday 3 July 2026

Welcoming a baby should always be a joyful moment. Yet for some of the refugee mothers we support, this period comes with particular challenges.

In our facilities, we support pregnant women and young mothers who have arrived in Luxembourg after often difficult journeys. Far from their home country, without resources or a support network, many cannot afford the essentials for their baby.

A basic care kit, along with occasional assistance, is provided to them. This support is invaluable and helps meet the essential needs of the first weeks.

However, these forms of assistance do not cover many items that contribute to a child’s comfort, hygiene, and healthy development. These additional costs represent a burden that many families cannot manage on their own.

It is precisely to meet these often invisible yet essential needs of young families that your support can make a real difference:

  • With €18, you provide bottles and teats to ensure a newborn’s feeding.
  • With €32, you offer a play mat — a first safe space to explore the world.
  • With €45, you fund a steriliser, ensuring essential hygiene.
  • With €55, you provide a baby monitor, allowing a mother to keep watch over her child safely.
  • With €75, you cover one month of diapers and wipes, helping preserve a baby’s health and dignity.

Every contribution, big or small, has a concrete and immediate impact.
And every gesture counts twice: it soothes a baby and gives a mother a moment of relief.

The first days shape a lifetime.

"I arrived in Luxembourg at the end of my Maman est son bébé dans les braspregnancy, after a long and very difficult journey. A few days later, I had to give birth in an emergency.

I had nothing to welcome my baby: no clothes, no stroller, no diapers, no wipes. This situation was very distressing for me.

After leaving the maternity ward, I was welcomed into a Hëllef um Terrain accommodation facility. Thanks to donations, the team was quickly able to provide everything my child needed: clothes, a stroller, a co-sleeper, and many other essential items.

During such a difficult time, this support meant so much to me. It allowed me to feel supported and to welcome my baby with a little more peace of mind and dignity."

Raquel Valente, Collaboratrice Hëllef um Terrain - Coordinatrice et référente parentalité"Every day, we support young mothers facing immense challenges. Many arrive after journeys marked by exile, instability, or trauma.

Despite their courage and determination to give their child the very best, they often lack essential items: diapers, suitable clothing, infant formula, hygiene products, or baby care equipment.

Yet every baby deserves to grow up in a safe environment and to receive, from birth, the care essential to their well-being. Supporting these young mothers, like Amina, means helping them approach this new chapter with greater confidence and hope.”

Hëllef um Terrain provides psycho-social support to around 3,000 refugees and migrants across 24 accommodation facilities in Luxembourg, including many mothers and families with children. Last year alone, 51 babies were born in these facilities.
